Health Apps

The German Federal Ministry of Health will start testing diabetes apps from July 2020

Press release
Frankfurt am Main, June 15, 2020

Gaining insights from practical application for better healthcare

The Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) is launching the „Zukunftsregion Digitale Gesundheit” (ZDG) initiative in Berlin. The aim of this initiative is to bring digital solutions more into practical application in order to gain insights into their use in health care.
The first sub-project involves testing apps and software for self-management of diabetes mellitus in the daily practice of patients and doctors.[1]. The test phase starts on July 1, 2020.

SiDiary maps the entire treatment process between patients and the practice team.

SiDiary was selected by the BMG as one of three digital applications for diabetes mellitus for testing. These are CE-certified medical devices in the form of apps and software solutions.

Opportunity for doctors to get involved in the initiative from the outset

Interested doctors from Berlin have the chance to be part of the BMG initiative from the very beginning. After registering via the office of the Zukunftsregion Digitale Gesundheit (https://www.zukunftsregion-digitale-gesundheit.de), doctors can take part in training courses on the apps and software and their application from June 24, 2020. The training courses will be offered several times over the coming months so that as many doctors as possible can participate in the initiative. Doctors can choose from the three digital applications, recommend them to their patients and actively integrate the app or software into their daily treatment routine.
The use of the digital applications is free of charge for patients and doctors during the test phase of the subproject.

Patients and doctors provide regular feedback.

During the subproject's runtime until June 2021, both doctors and patients will regularly provide feedback to the BMG and report on their experiences in everyday practice. In this way, the BMG aims to collect and evaluate success factors and hurdles as well as approaches for improving the acceptance and use of digital solutions.

„It is a special honor for a medium-sized company like SINOVO to be able to support the ministry with our SiDiary in its initiative for testing digital applications together with global companies such as Roche and Ascensia”, explains Jan Filip, CEO of SINOVO. „On this occasion, we have fundamentally enhanced our software in recent weeks. On the one hand, we have optimized the handling for patients and doctors. On the other hand, the regular surveys for feedback have been programmed in such a way that answering them is particularly easy”, Filip continues.

New opportunities in diabetology through the use of apps and software

When used correctly, apps can help to improve the treatment and therapeutic outcome of diabetes mellitus. For example, it is usually easier to document diet, physical activity and insulin intake using a smartphone than with a handwritten diary.

The apps are often web-based and store the data on a server (cloud) of the manufacturer. The cloud offers the possibility that the patient shares his data with the doctor and so the doctor gets online access to the patient data.

Digital applications such as apps are developing rapidly. It is particularly important to demonstrate the positive benefits of apps through longer-term studies and research in order to achieve greater acceptance among users.

„We are all very excited to see what insights the BMG's longer-term initiative will bring. We are confident that SiDiary will be well received by patients and doctors because it provides comprehensive support for diabetes therapy for both sides”, Filip concludes.
